Classic Cars Breakfast Club at Goodwood - 29/07/23

Potentially an age thing, but early mornings are becoming more and more appealing. The roads are quieter, the lighting is better and it generally a bit more chilled out and productive. Seeing there was a Breakfast Club meet at Goodwood for classic cars reasonably early on a Sunday morning was a no brainer of an event to attend.

Gates opened at 8am and even at this point the crowds had formed with the paddock full and the track filling out. The attendees were so varied, including rare metal at both ends of the spectrum with a Ferrari 250 Lusso and an Austin Princess. From thoroughbred track cars to off road work horses there was the weird and the wonderful.

The sun was shining as we arrived, bathing the circuit and surrounding areas in a soft morning glow as everyone was wondering round coffee and bacon roll in hand.

Having been to the circuit for events like Revival, Members Meeting and Players Classic where the track is live, being able to walk on the track itself was a surreal experience. Being stood beyond the chicane facing back towards the Super Shell on the outside of Woodcote was a spot I’ve always wanted to take photos so an event like this was ideal, now all that was needed was the crowds to clear…

As always the Porsches caught the camera the most, with some stunning 356’s covering the early era, then phasing into some 901, 911 and 912 scattered around. The early iconic 911 shaped cars really highlighted how much they’ve swollen up over the past 50 years, and even when compared to the few 930 Turbo’s in the paddock which had enormous hips. Stand out’s were the two 911 2.7 Carrera RS with the small duck tail spoiler being the only feature to break the smooth and sleek profile.

Another air-cooled feature of the morning were the three Volkswagen Beatles which are a bit of a guilty pleasure car, especially an early split screen.

Midmorning came around and the weather took a turn as the wind picked up and the rain started to pour. With the rain the mass exodus began as cars were putting roofs up and heading home ASAP.

The wet conditions meant the majority of people left meaning there was so much free space around the remaining cars making it soo much better for capturing the cars without people getting in the way.

Parked up along the straight leading into the chicane were a brace of stunning deep blue British classics with an Aston Martin DB6 and a Jaguar XK150 Coupe. With the rain clearing the surrounding cars it gave so much free space around them to make some great photo opportunities.

It’s been a couple of years since we last attended a Breakfast Club and the turn out has grown significantly which is great to see. As always its fantastic to see people making the effort, rain or shine to bring out their prized vehicles.

Thank you to Goodwood Road and Racing Club for organising the morning, and thank you to all the attendees who brought cars to the circuit with an extra thanks to those who braved the rain and stayed till the end.

We’re looking forward to the next Breakfast Club and hopefully we’ll see some of you there too.
