Four Wheeled Perfection
We were fortunate enough to attend the 79th Members Meeting down at Goodwood Motor Circuit near Chichester, Sussex.
The paddock at a Members Meeting is a spectacle like no other, the breadth of vehicles is second to none. Entering the paddock you’re met first with a row of GT40s lined up, some burbling away warming up ready to head out for qualifying.
Walking through the insanity of pre-war grand prix cars is always impressive, and with an all Frazer Nash race this year was exceptional. The contrast to modern cars is dramatic, from exposed flailing chains and valve rockers to no harnesses (and in some cases barely a seat). Hats off (or should that be tweed caps) to anyone who takes these early race cars out on track trying to find the limit.
Nostalgia was in full flow with the V10 F1 Paddock, such an iconic noise held within the bright, bold liveries of the period.
I always forget how prevalent cigarette manufacturers were in motorsport, The touring cars in the Gerry Marshall Trophy summed this up perfectly with near enough all of them having some connection to smoking.
Surely one of the most memorable sponsors was Rothmans, and this year at 79M there was a collection of Porsche 956’s including multiple in the Rothmans livery. The 956’s were all in prep for a sunset display around the circuit, more to come on that in the coming days.
By more luck than judgement finishing looking round the paddock timed perfectly with the start of racing… check back for the on track action.
